Description

Ocimum basilicum

Genovese Basil is known for its large, fragrant leaves and is considered the best variety for making authentic pesto. Originating from the Genoa region of Italy, this basil has been the cornerstone of Italian cuisine for centuries. Our Genovese Basil seeds bring this tradition into your garden, offering a flavour that surpasses that of other varieties.

About Genovese Basil: The Genovese Basil seed variety is prized for its vigorous growth and exceptionally large, dark green leaves that are slightly wrinkled. This type of basil is characterized by its strong, sweet aroma and the classic basil flavour with a hint of clove, which is much more pronounced than in other basil types. The plants can grow up to 60-80 cm in height and are known for their uniform growth and productivity.

Growing In Australia: Genovese Basil is well-adapted to the diverse Australian climates, thriving in warm, sunny spots. It is suitable for growing in most regions from spring through autumn. In tropical areas, it performs best during the cooler, dry season. Genovese Basil requires regular watering but is relatively drought-tolerant once established. It shows good resistance to common basil diseases, such as fusarium wilt, but should be monitored for pest attacks, like aphids and spider mites.

Benefits and Uses: The leaves of Genovese Basil are not only used for creating authentic Genovese pesto but also to enhance salads, tomato dishes, and pizzas with their fresh, pungent flavour. Nutritionally, basil is a good source of vitamins A, K, and C, calcium, iron, and antioxidants. Beyond its culinary uses, basil has been used traditionally for its herbal properties, including aiding digestion and acting as a natural anti-inflammatory.

Planting and Care Tips: For best results, sow Genovese Basil seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost or directly outdoors when temperatures consistently stay above 10°C. Plant seeds 5 mm deep in well-draining soil and space them 25 cm apart. Basil loves sunlight, so choose a spot that receives at least 6 hours of direct sun daily. Keep the soil moist, especially during dry spells, and apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks to encourage lush growth. Pinch off the flower heads to prolong leaf production and harvest leaves regularly to promote new growth.
