Description

Ocimum basilicum

Lemon Basil stands out for its unique lemon fragrance and flavour, distinguishing it from other basil varieties. Originating from Southeast Asia, this herb is a staple in Indonesian, Laotian, and Persian cuisine. Our Lemon Basil seeds offer gardeners the opportunity to grow a basil variety that is prized for its aromatic leaves and endless culinary uses.

About Lemon Basil: Lemon Basil seeds grow into medium-sized plants with light green, narrow leaves and a distinct lemon scent, courtesy of its high citral content, which is the same compound found in lemon peel. This variety produces small, white flowers if allowed to bloom. One of the standout traits of Lemon Basil is its preference for warmer growing conditions, making it an excellent choice for summer planting.

Growing In Australia: Lemon Basil is particularly well-suited to the Australian climate, thriving in warm, sunny locations. It can be grown in all regions of Australia, provided there is protection from frost. This variety is relatively easy to care for and is resistant to many of the common pests that affect other basil types, although it should be monitored for aphids. Regular watering is essential, especially in hotter regions, to prevent the soil from drying out.

Benefits and Uses: Lemon Basil's citrusy flavour makes it an excellent addition to salads, fish dishes, and teas. It is especially popular for use in stir-fries and as a garnish on desserts. Nutritionally, Lemon Basil is rich in vitamins and minerals, including Vitamin K, and offers antioxidant properties. Beyond its culinary applications, Lemon Basil can be used in potpourris and as a natural insect repellent due to its strong aroma.

Planting and Care Tips: Sow Lemon Basil seeds directly into the garden or pots after the last frost, when the soil has warmed. Plant seeds at a depth of about 5mm and space plants approximately 30-40cm apart to ensure they have enough room to grow. Lemon Basil requires at least 6-8 hours of sunlight per day. Maintain consistent soil moisture, and apply a balanced, organic fertiliser monthly to support healthy growth. Pinching off the tips of the plants will encourage bushier growth and delay flowering, extending the harvest period of the leaves.
